Most energy-saving conversations in HVAC focus on the unit — the boiler, the heat pump, the AHU. Ductwork rarely gets a mention, despite being the system that decides how much of that unit's output actually reaches the building. Specify or install it wrong, and even the most efficient unit on the market ends up working harder than it should. Here's where the real savings are hiding in your ductwork, and how our [duct sizing calculator](https://elephantduct.com/duct-minimum-size-calculator) helps you find them before install.

## Get the Size Right First

Undersized ductwork forces air through too small a space, driving up **static pressure** and making fans work harder to move the same volume of air — a direct energy cost that shows up on every bill. Oversized ductwork causes the opposite problem: airflow velocity drops below the level the system was designed for, undermining delivery efficiency and, in humid conditions, increasing condensation risk. Both mistakes usually come from working off a rule-of-thumb spec rather than the actual airflow and velocity figures for that specific run. Running the numbers through a proper [sizing calculator](https://elephantduct.com/duct-minimum-size-calculator) rather than rounding up or down is the single biggest lever here.

## Reduce Ductwork Pressure Loss With Fewer, Gentler Bends

Every bend in a duct run adds resistance, and resistance costs fan energy. Elephant Duct's bending radius of roughly **1.2–1.8x its diameter** allows for smoother, more gradual direction changes than rigid ductwork typically achieves on-site, which reduces the turbulence (and therefore the pressure drop) at each turn. Fewer sharp transitions along a run means the fan isn't fighting the ductwork just to maintain airflow.#

## Insulate Properly to Stop Losing Conditioned Air

Poorly insulated ductwork loses heat (or gains it, on the cooling side) as air travels from the unit to the room, meaning the system has to overcompensate to deliver the temperature actually specified. Elephant Duct's range spans **4mm, 8mm, and 25mm** insulation thicknesses — [Asian Elephant](https://elephantduct.com/4mm-asian-elephant-ducting), [African Elephant](https://elephantduct.com/8mm-african-elephant-ducting), and [Woolly Mammoth](https://elephantduct.com/25mm-woolly-mammoth-ducting) — each offering a thermal resistance of **R = 0.12 m²·K/W**, so the specified thickness can be matched to the run length and temperature demand rather than defaulting to one option everywhere. Better insulation also reduces condensation risk, which protects the building fabric as well as the energy bill.

## Stop Leaking Air You've Already Paid to Condition

Leaky joints are a quiet source of wasted energy — every cubic metre of conditioned air that escapes through a poorly sealed connection is money spent twice. Ductwork that resists deformation and doesn't sag or distort over time holds its joints and shape far better than ducting prone to slumping, which keeps leakage down for the life of the installation rather than just on day one.

## Keep Ductwork Clean and Free-Flowing

A duct interior that collects mould, bacterial growth, or debris restricts airflow over time, gradually pushing the system back toward the same fan-strain problem as undersizing — just introduced slowly rather than at spec stage. An antimicrobial, hygienic coating helps keep the internal surface resistant to this kind of build-up, so the system keeps performing closer to its design figures for longer rather than degrading year on year.

## Design for the Whole Run, Not Just the Unit

Energy efficiency in ductwork isn't one decision, it's a set of them: diameter, insulation, joint integrity, bend geometry, and internal condition all compound across the length of a run. Getting each one right individually adds up to a system that does less unnecessary work to hit the same comfort target — which is where the actual savings come from. Full specs and standards for our range are on our [benefits](https://elephantduct.com/benefits) and [standards & legislation](https://elephantduct.com/standards-legislation) pages; as always, check current guidance directly for the latest figures, as standards are periodically revised.
